Does anyone know the actual month that summer starts? Some people think that it is now because the clocks have gone back but i think it doesnt start until may.

Who actually thinks this? The answer is June. The beginning of Summer is marked by the Summer Solstice on 21st June.

It is a bit confusing as the start of Summer and Midsummer are only a couple of days apart.

So you don't get caught out mcfly Summer ends with the Autumnal Equinox on September 22.

Climatologists and meteorologists will doubtless say the following is nonsense, but this is what I think (possibly based on having spent my early years in northern Scotland!) The midsummer solstice is June 21/22. In a temperate climate such as ours, I always feel the seasons are about the same length...ie some 13 weeks. Accordingly, in my scheme of things, summer starts 6� weeks before Jun 21st - namely, around May 6th - and ends around August 6th. Of course, in individual years, these dates may prove wrong - "long, hot summers" are not unknown - but they work adequately as a general guide.

I can understand why all this confusion about summer.....it starts on the summer solsitice.....I always have taken the seasons to be:

Summer: June, July, August

Autumn: Sept., Oct., Nov.

Winter: Dec., Jan., Feb.

Spring: March, April, May

At least this is what I was always taught....maybe I am out of step with everyone else.

The summer months in Ireland are May, June and July. 1st February - St Brigid's Day - marks the beginning of spring.

june 21st summer, sept 21st autumn, dec 21st winter march 21st spring. except when its sometimes 22nd

Here in "Down Under" In Oz it's a little more simple Sept first for spring, from then on the first of Dec, summer; first of March, autumn; then first of June winter.
