The midsummer solstice is June 21/22. In a temperate climate such as ours, I always feel the seasons are about the same length...ie some 13 weeks. Accordingly, in my scheme of things, summer starts 6 weeks before Jun 21st - namely, around May 6th - and ends around August 6th. Of course, in individual years, these dates may prove wrong - "long, hot summers" are not unknown - but they work adequately as a general guide.
I can understand why all this confusion about summer.....it starts on the summer solsitice.....I always have taken the seasons to be:
Summer: June, July, August
Autumn: Sept., Oct., Nov.
Winter: Dec., Jan., Feb.
Spring: March, April, May
At least this is what I was always taught....maybe I am out of step with everyone else.
Here is a link that give average monthly temps. and rainfall......you can decide for yourself. http://www.burford.oxon.sch.uk/ks3ict/Year%208/Uni
