When do you cut a budgies nails?

How do you know when a budgies nails need cutting? and don't say when there to long!!

you have to be very careful if you are going to do this yourself,best to take them to the vets.they have a vein that runs part way down into their claws and if you cut this i believe it can be quite serious re blood loss.you can buy sandpaper perch covers from pet shops this helps to keep them filed down naturally.

Hi, do you use the sand-paper rolls that fit over the perch? If you do....then very rarely would be the answer. As polly speed says....be very careful of cutting the 'quick'. If they seem over-grown and you are unsure take him to the vet or a good pet shop where they will do it for you.

as has been said you do need to be very carefuland even vets get it wrong. My Mum took her budgie to have this done at the vet and he cut the budgie and made him bleed, he died a couple of days later (the budgie not the vet!)
