Lived in a flat, maybe not ideal, but the owner took him on long walks nearby. Owner was a tiny lady, Akita v. big! She had to muzzle him, as he went for other dogs so frequently. Not sure on kids, but in that case I don't think she allowed him near them.
Apparently her hudband was in wheelchair, and she said the dog was really protective of him, so I guess from that they can be loyal.
Don't know enough to form an opinion tbh.

Owning an Akita is a decision not to be considered lightly. My brother has owned three at various times. Leelapops comment about them being protective is apt. They are considered to be a 'one-person' dog, tremendously loyal, and with the characteristic of defending their owner to the death.
One of my brother's dogs came from an Akita rescue centre. (This was in the USA). He got an intense grilling into his lifestyle, neighbourhood, house, family, etc. The fact that he was single helped a lot. He was told that if he'd had young children at home, the centre would most likely have disapproved of giving him a dog.

the fact that next door had one that was good with kids means nothing!!!! Most of the pit bull that have killed and mauled babies and children were also good with kids until the event!!!
Only deaths i've heard about recently is by Rotties and a Staffy... surely you can't judge every dog this way??
