Owning an Akita is a decision not to be considered lightly. My brother has owned three at various times. Leelapops comment about them being protective is apt. They are considered to be a 'one-person' dog, tremendously loyal, and with the characteristic of defending their owner to the death.
One of my brother's dogs came from an Akita rescue centre. (This was in the USA). He got an intense grilling into his lifestyle, neighbourhood, house, family, etc. The fact that he was single helped a lot. He was told that if he'd had young children at home, the centre would most likely have disapproved of giving him a dog.
