My mother has gone into a Residential Home. Her cat is very old and flea-ridden. Ordinary treatments are only effective for a few days. Does anyone know of stronger remedies, please?

Perhaps you should take her to the vet first, poor thing must be so uncomfortable. Front Line spot on will also keep the fleas at bay. You should also think about spraying the furniture and carpets, while your mother is away. You can pick a can of that up from the vet as well.
