babies cots - why wood and not padded like headboards?

just curious, is there a reason why baby beds are not padded and are made from plain wood?

I mean we pad coffins... why not babies beds?

i assume there must be some logic to it, but other than dirt and babies chewing on it, i am not sure what it is...?

they can pull out the buttons? the padding gives off fumes...?

any ideas?

Not sure Joko, but there's probably some truth in all your suggestions. Obviously you can buy the padded headboards & sides, which can be washed regularly. If the whole thing was made of a padded material, I imagine it'd get filthy after a while. My babies Silver Cross prams were fully padded, but every part of the inner "cot" could be easily removed and cleaned, whereas an entire bed probably wouldn't be so easy.

The final padded-beds (coffins) are for the aftermath of the 'second childhood'. The initial non-padded beds are a learning experience.

Hi joko, I have a feeling it is so that the baby cannot move over and suffocate against the sides.
You can buy the padding but not a good idea for under 1 year I think. : )

Bumpers aren't meant to be used after 12 months as they can climb on them and fall out - but my friend bought one that said not to use before 12 months lol
Emmy has always had to have one - it surrounds the whole cot, but she also had to sleep with a dog bed under her sheepskin so she wouldnt move and now she does move she can move herself away from the sides

Might be something to do with health and safety, it might seem over precautious but seems more sensible with the risks of cot deaths and suffocation.
