As BOO says it's all down to the dog and the owner for instance nobody will ever convince me that there is a better dog then a GSD, having said that I must admit to likeing almost all dogs dogs
as other Abers have said if that is your breed that is what you will think, I personally think they are too boistrous, and slobbery, and couldnt live with them, I prefer my rough collies - but if I had a huge house and acres of land I would no doubt rescue a large variety of dogs as I dont dislike anything.
I wouldn't have one as a gift!! but I'm A fan of the Jack Russell like BOO. carakeel and I are looking into buying an Irish Wolfhound at the minute but cant find a good one, maybe more luck in the new year.
I love all breeds of dogs. Cats also but have an allergy to them if I handle them.
I lean towards Westies myself.
Individual choice though.
My last Westie died a few years ago and it has taken me all this time to get another Westie.
Have had 2 goldies and what a pain in the butt they were, give me a black lab anytime, after that my darling gsd, loopy but loveable and hopefully the best of all, my new dogs coming soon...bavarian mountain hounds.
Don't like toy breeds but that's just personal choice. I probably wouldn't turn any away
GSD's are the best - can't stand Boxers. Goldies are usually nice natured, but boy do they moult (mind you so do Shepherds, but the Goldie hair is so much longer and silkier and seems to stick to everything).
horsestache: lol no but thanks for asking! but for real, i've had pits all my life. if you get one from a reputable breeder, whats the problem? they are the most loyal dogs in the world. i love animals and would never condone dog fighting (if thats why you feel the way you do). why should they suffer for mans mistakes? they are amazing dogs and i will continue to have them. sorry if you don't agree!
Kyra, I assume you are talking pit bull terriers - if so, do you live in United Kingdom?
I really cant understand the attraction with SBT or pit bulls for that matter, as they may be loyal to their owners 'in the house', but they all seem to be a nightmare when outside, uncontrollable and a dislike for any other dog that may be in their area.
Having grown up with both golden retrievers and labradors I love both breeds. They're generally so nice natured and laid back. Personally I'm not overly keen on small yappy dogs - although do have asoft spot for Westies. Also not keen on German Shepherds. Luckily everyone is different though, otherwise there would be far more dogs without homes!
jules: yes i am but no i live in the US. and i have not had that experience w them @ all. i've heard the stories but as i said before it makes all the diff. where you get your pit from...if they are bred properly they do not display any of the prop. you mention. mine have always been well behaved. i train them from pups though; with a breed like there's you have to. i'm sorry you've had a bad experience w them, it breaks my heart because they are the best!
I find Boxers too pushy and slobbery, and I got broken bones in my foot when one jumped up at my back and push my foot under the metal bar on a kennel door! They slobber and basically I just don't like the look of them. Thats not to say I can't appreciate a nice one in the show ring, but only from a distance. We have a woman at ringcraft with three and they fly out at everything that moves and she can't hold them. Only ever met one I liked, and she was an ancient old girl who was very gentle.
Forgot to add, one of my Heeler bitches absolutely hates them too, as two 'jumped' at her when she was at her first show, and now she see them coming from a mile off, and the rumble starts in her stomach, comes up through her throat and by the time it comes out she is like something possessed.
