they are called 'puli' or Hungarian water dogs
puli
Not sure when, if ever, we get called water dogs ! We are not fond of water. This may be a confusion. Some breeds with coats that can go into something like our 'cords' and which also don't moult were bred as water dogs, such as the poodle and the Portuguese water dog; but Puli coats are slightly different, meant to be weather proof in all seasons. The Hungarian Puli is for herding sheep. We have a very much larger cousin, with identical coat, called the Komondor. That breed is for guarding flocks.
