Joint Care

My lab has a touch of rheumatioid arthritis and I have been advised to give her Pedigree Joint Care x 1 a day. She's fine running, swimming and chasing the ball - it's only when she is resting that she seems to have a problem.
Has anyone else tried this - for their dog, of course? If it works for her, I might even try it myself!

A colleague of mine has set up a business with her husband (after having completed all the necessary training) that is dog hydotherapy.

My parents dog (a Scottish Terrier) has the same problems as your Lab (it was only after she had been resting that she really struggled) and they took her there and she is like a different dog now.

She loves water and swims and surfs almost every day when the weather is reasonable (I live by the sea) - but thanks for the hydrotherapy suggestion anyway. We don't have any pools within 50 miles of where I live.

Hi, the Joint care chews can be fattening....not good in a dog suffering from joint pain! Try glucosamine or a green lipped mussel supplement. I use Flexicose [my dog is still a pup...but has growth plate problems] and she has improved greatly. Human supplements [Holland and barrett] will work I however use the doggy version of Flexicose [bought on Ebay from the USA....so much cheaper!!!]. Also, have you just tried using codliver oil on her food....does wonders for the joints and their coats.

The Pedigree has glucosamine and green lipped mussel in it, but think I might try the codliver oil.

lol....yep that's me....not until Easter though. The chews do contain GLM and glucosamine....but also lots of un-needed calories....that's why I just add the supplements directly to her food....you'll be amazed at the difference!

I have used Green Lipped Mussel tablets for a few years now and they have really worked on my dog.

I get the human ones from Holland & Barrat - when they are on offer I stock up on them.

They work out much cheaper than the chews and you know precisely how much you are giving and you are not giving anything else (like colourants, preservatives etc) with them.

If I miss a day he refuses to walk, so I know for a fact they work!

One product that I found that worked well for one of my dogs was 'Johnson's 4joints' It had my 12 year old german shepherd running around like a two year old.
It's in liquid form and is soluble in water. I've often wondered it it would be any good for my aching arm.

Never heard of pedigree joint care, reading other comments i assume they are some kind of chew, and would guess any 'joint care' contained in them is minimal. You really need to be looking at her weight, and as labs are prone to weight gain, i wouldnt give her anything in addition to her food in the form of treats.

There are numerous products on the market, green lipped mussel works for Kita, so you could try that, or glucosamine, also available from Holland and Barratt, or some of the other joint products available on line, like Synflex, which is easily added to the dogs food as it is a liquid - http://www.collienet.com/collienet_shoppingmal l_hygiene_Petcareproducta.htm

The Pedigree Joint Care advert has had to be withdrawn as it is misleading, giving people the impression it has some sort of medicinal qualities to 'cure' joint pain.

Try glucosamine and a Bioflow collar - buy from ebay - cheaper than from the Bioflow agents!

I have also heard some very good reports about glucosamine. But don't expect it to work overnight. I believe it will take about 6 weeks to see any benefits.

Thanks to all of you who have given me advice. Missy was overweight, but we have managed to it reduce by 6kg and she is maintained at that.
She's so much more lively since the weight loss, all treats have been stopped and she's stopped putting on her soulful look when we're eating.
I have never heard of a Bioflow, but will take a look today. I ordered Flexicose yesterday for her - would it be overdosing to give that and put on a collar?
(I'm planning on taking Flexicose myself, but draw the line at drinking from her bowl and doing whoopsies in the garden).

Jules77/Kita1 - I use green lipped mussel cream myself - it was fantastic for knee pain after I injured my leg. Never thought of the tablets.
One last question - why are people on Animals and Nature so much nicer that some of those on other sites?

lol....cos we love our fur babies....makes us nice!!! Make sure you get the human Flexicose [there is a differnce]. And a suggestion for treat giving....if you feed kibble....take and handful from her daily allowance and give this as treats....they're so stoopid [bless 'em] they don't realise....lol

our gsd has joint problems and is stiff vet recommended human dose of glucosamin we get it from age stop online also she wears a bio flow collar and both have really helped i too now have a bio flow braclet but cant afford glucosamin tablets for me as well. the animals always come first dont they ruth xxx

I have a cavalier king charles about 6 yrs old(rescue dog) she is overweight and arthritic. I was taking her swimming for 20mins at each session, she is on Rimadyl from the vet and have tried Green Lip mussel extract glucosamine/chondroitin and anything else that has been suggested. She hated walks and so on...
We had a free weeks sample of joint care + and it has been amazing and easily equal to the adverts claims. She now asks to go for a walk, she chases a ball and jumps easily onto the sofa and even jumped up onto the bed the other day. I am now on week three and I feel that I would keep her on joint care + for ever. I have never seen anything work this incredibly well. When I first got her she couldn't wag her tail she was so unfit and now she chases squirrels!! She had improved with extra forced exercise but in three weeks she has been transformed

Sorry could I add that any fears of it being fattening would be easily outweighed by the extra energy the dog will have. My dogs weight has not changed yet but it is only 3 weeks. Also I noted that the pedigree website allows you to print off 25% off vouchers. I am not connected at all with the company but was trying to leave my thanks on their site for this lifechanging product, when I saw this site. Viv
