In our local paper yesterday there was a front page story about a dustman who had found a severely injured cat in his crusher, just before he was about to crush his load. The poor moggy was wrapped in a plastic bag and had two broken legs and other injuries that a vet said were at least 2 weeks old. He guessed that the owners-seeing that the animal wasn't getting better-decided to dispose of it ,rather than spend any money on its care. This is just so shocking....why do people do such cruel things??

I don't like reading stories about this as it makes me so very angry. We live in such a throw-away culture that people seem to extend to living creatures as well. I don't like violence or cruelty but I would be very tempted to do some serious harm to someone who could treat an animal like this!
It is the way they are bought up. If you are bought up with animals, you will always care for them.

I hate to see children that are frightened of dogs, and it usually figures that their parents dont like dogs either. These are the kind of children that grow up into non caring adults who may end up with a pet as they think it is a good idea, but as they are so naive the dogs end up in rescue or are thrown out on the streets.

Dont you find that generally if someone is an animal lover, they are a good person?

Some people say they like animals, but you can tell if they really do by their reaction to them.
jules77 I know exactly what you mean.

From my experience, the people who I know that are animal lovers are all generally lovely people, and those who are not tend to be a bit cold and less nice.
I know I'll probably be shouted at for sayin that so I'll just make clear that this is from the people who I know, its not a general statement !

I also hate seeing children, but even more adults who are afraid of dogs. Growing up being taught to love animals give a person a sense of compassion. I always think when I see kids afraid of dogs, that their parents should sort it out. Fair enough if the child has been attacked but it is the children who are afraid because mum and dad have always shied (sp) them away from dogs that get to me.
I was walkin my border collie the other day and a woman with a child who was maybe about three crossed to the other side of the road so that her child wouldn't have to walk by my dog!
i cant stand cruelty to animals. I do not like violent films etc. But I could quite easily watch someone who is cruel to animals being put up against a wall and shot . In fact I could cheerfully do it myself.

Jules...... Yes I do agree with you. I too have noticed that people who are good to animals are usually nice people to know. I always find that people who are very self centered and selfish tend to have no time or compassion for animals. I have no time for people who do not like animals. they are not my kind of people. And usually these people pass this on to their children.
jules77...I don't agree that those bought up with animals will always care for them. I was brought up in childrens homes from the age of 3 months and we weren't allowed pets.I would never, ever harm an animal.I love all animals and give money to both the PDSA and RSPCA on a regular basis.I know of people who were brought up with animals that at best are neglectful of their pets or at worse have been downright cruel to them. I think it all boils down to individuals and you can't generalise in this situation. Most people would never harm an animal but there are always the evil ones as mentioned in pastafreak's post.(BTW I read that in a paper too, can't remember which one though)
Oh poor cat , anything like that makes my heart miss a beat , bless it .
May I take this opportunity to ask after little Cleo and send her a kiss :-) xxx
Jules77, my little boy is terrified of dogs, we don't know why this is as there has never been an incident with a dog that we can think of, that would make him react the way he does whenever he meets a dog.

I most certainly love all animals and was brought up with a cat and 2 dogs. The reason why we don't keep a pet is quite simply because i don't have the time to care for one properly and also the expense, ie vet's bills.

I believe it's just as cruel to have a pet when you haven't got the time or money to care for it properly.

My daughter when younger didn't have a pet dog or cat, but did have a couple of hamsters and she is the most caring ,loving, sensible 20 year old you are ever likely to meet.

When I was a child I was desperate for a pet...I would have been happy with anything. I even tried "adopting" the neighbors cat! Finally-when I was 10-my parents...or at least my mom...reluctantly allowed me to have a dog. Well, my mom was a VERY fastidious housewife and I don't think she really liked the idea of an animal in the house. For this reason the dog stayed outside all day-tied up. And when he was brought in at night he was tied up-in the basement. Now-when I think of this it makes me cringe and I would be horrified if I knew anyone that would do this....but I know that my mother was not an evil person and she would never have deliberately hurt another creature. i can only say she was ignorant and possibly fearfull of animals, and for this reason did not treat our dog as he deserved to be.( he must have been well cared for in other ways...he lived to 17) Me---I'm still looking for animals to adopt!

I'm happy the cat lived. It must have been fate for the dustman to find him. He deserves a medal. Little b's deserve nothing.
