When I leave my dog on his own during the day or when I go out in the evening he scratches at the door and I cannot stop him from doing it. What can I do to prevent him from doing this? How do I repremand him? He is left in my utility room with toys but it seems to only happen when I go out for longer periods i.e. more than 3hrs. He does not do this when he goes to bed at night and he is in the same room for much longer i.e. 8hrs.

Sounds like your pup suffers from separation anxiety.
Have a read up on it on the net. You need to work on it for a long period of time and you should definitely NOT reprimand the behaviour as it'll only make it worse.

good luck
