Why do Moles create molehills, do they serve a purpose other than acting as a dumping ground for the removed earth.

Every so often they need a funnel or the air in their tunnels will get stale very quickly. The reason that they make such a neat heap instead of pushing the earth out randomly is that the mount prevents the rain from running straight into the hole.
