Humane way to put fish to sleep?
39 Answers
This is a serious question. Is there a humane way to put a fish to sleep, I have been told to put it in a bucket of water with clove oil, or in a bag in the freezer (in the latter case, I assume there should be water in the bag)?
He has severe dropsy and is way past help, but between myself and my husband we are struggling to find a way to put him to sleep humanely.
I am not keen on having him in the freezer either......

Quite a few years ago, when I was new to fish keeping, I put a few diseased Guppies down the toilet, and flushed it,, never again, my wife went in there, the next thing was an almighty scream, she couldn't stop shaking for days, all these eyes staring up at her.
After that, I just clobbered them with a brick, sounds cruel, but it was quick and painless.

for fear of him 'bursting' we have decided not to wait another day, and he is in a bucket of water and clove oil as we speak, it seems to be working pretty quickly to be honest as within a minute or two he is on his side and there is evidence of his internal bleeding underneath.........you wouldnt believe the trauma we have here, OH is in a foul mood as he has had to do the dirty deed.
