Cost of spaying cats

I am due to get my 8months old females spayed this week, and although I ********** do no berudge paying for this atall I was a bit shocked at the price - �49.95 each! In no way would it deter me from getting them done, but, I am 7months pregnant and money is extremely tight, as it is for many people, so if there is anyway I could get this done cheaper (somebody has suggested RSPCA to me but a friend I knew only qualified for this because she was on benefits).

Please could you tell me how much you have paid to get your cats spayed? Thanks.

P.S. I phoned the other local vets and they charged �45.67 so the difference is minimal between local companies.

Hi Natalie - hope all's going well with your pregnancy.

I agree, our pets do cost an arm & a leg when it comes to operations, etc.

Our Milly is about to be spayed too & the vet's 'Companion Care' (based inside Pets at Home), costs �50.08, plus a few �'s if she should need antibiotics! The follow up appointment & removal of stitches is included in the price.

Have just phoned two more local vets & the prices are the same, give or take a few pence, so will go for Pets at Home.

I remember years ago when we had our late Smudge spayed - I cried as I dropped her off at the vet's & on my way to work. I'm sure I'll do the same with Milly, but know it's for the best.

I hope Jez, Raffy & your Dad's cat Molly, all have an easy time & are soon purring around your feet again.

Glad I am not the only one Smudge - I hate looking at their little faces, I am sure they are going to hate me after for doing it to them! I also feel bad because they will be seperated throughout the day and they go everywhere together, I just can't wait to get them back after the op to take care of them when they are home :-)

As for putting my feet up - as soon as I get home and have had my tea I am going to spend the evening with my feet up for sure, think the baby is having a party in there today - everything aches! Can't wait til he / she is here, not sure the cats will feel the same, mind you - I am sure yanking their tails must be a very attractive idea to a baby!

Im sure your cats will soon learn to keep clear of baby. Our Burmese have never fogiven us for having little CRX Im sure. They used to lie on my lap until he started kicking them off.

I hope the ops go OK and they dont feel too bad afterwards.

I personally feel that �50 for a spay operation isn't very much, when you consider about 45 minutes of the vets time, plus the cost of the sedative, the premedicant drugs, the anaesthetic, the painkillers and antibiotics the cat receives before the op, the couple of hours of the nurses time, both before and after the op, and the cost of running the surgical theatre during the op.

Also, it's major open abdominal surgery for the cat. Try charging �50 in human medicine for an equivalent op!!

You are right Noweia, �50 might not seem much for a major op on a cat, but it may be for some on a tight budget, 'specially just after Christmas & as Nat says she has two cats.

My vet charges �75 for this op. Even so, given what abig op it is, I think it is very good value. It is a lot of money though and sometimes difficult to find. But at least with something like this you can plan for it and hopefully set money aside for it. It is the emergency treatment that I worry about. I have pet insurance for this, but you have to pay the money up front and then claim it back from the insurance company. Just 2 hours in to 2007 one of our cats yawned and then he could not close his mouth again. We had to rush him to the Emergency vets. They wanted �75 up front just to look at him. They had to knock him out and put his jaw back to normal. Cost us �150.00. In June it happened again. 11 0'clock at night Cost �120.00. Then my own vet did some x-rays and discovered he had a jaw malformation and he had to do corrective surgery. Cost �600. Fortunately we have the insurance, but we had to pay up front and then claim it back. We have a credit card which we keep for emergencies such as this. We could not even consider not having the treatment because we could not afford it. We would sell the house and live in a tent if we had to.

in the west midlands we have an organisation called "the pet vaccination clinic", they are very reasonable on speying and neutering.
Just had my male havana done for �17.50

i think they have other clinics accross the uk.
