my 10 year old staffy cross max has been lethargic since i got home at 6.45, noone here can tell me how long he has been like this. he won;t get up, has turned down his dinner (which is amazing as he scoffs it down in seconds usually) and his nose is cool but dry. he keeps sighing and though his eyes follow me he won;t get up, even when i have just eaten a vanilla slice in front of him, usually he is begging and whining for a MORSEL. I think maybe he has eaten something, possibly eggshells, as my son says he did leave some on the side and they went. I am thinking i will just leawve him to rest and sleep, he really does not seem to be showing any sign of pain. he is overweight though, could it be his heart? I am not sure about ringing the vet , I donl;t know why, it' not like me to be so indecisive. Shall i just leave him to sleep?

It sounds like a bug but then there would be sickness/diaorrhea usually.If he were mine I`d phone the vet for advice given his age to be on the safe side.!

Ok thanks eah, I knew that would be the advice, i have phones the emergency vets number and spoken to a vet and he thinks that if he has got up and walked around the block, which i did make him do incase he needed toi kick start his bowels, than it isnlt likely to be his heart, he thinks he may have picked up a bug somewhere, and he said leave him to sleep overnight and if hge is still not eating or drinking in the morning to take him into the surgery, there is a surgery at 2pm but we can take him in earlier if he is still not drinking.

It's a worry, i have never seen either of them like this, certainly not max he's such a geedy livewire

There is a bug around at the moment, my 12 year old boy had it a couple of weeks back. He was sick twice, bile, did not want food and got weak (he did drink small amounts though). His tummy seemed bloated and for 12 hours he could not stretch out flat on his side to sleep (I stayed up all night with him). He went out for a wee at 10 oclock at night then did not stand again until 10 oclock the following night when he went out and had one long, long wee. Came back in and ate a small tin of dog food. Since then he has slowly come back to normal. He never had any further vomiting and never had the runs. His tummy did alot of rumbling too, and he was 'passing wind' and smelling the house out. He has been on chicken and rice since, I made the mistake of giving him a small piece of liver the other morning - the living room stank!!! So he is back on the chicken!

Speaking to other dog owners around their dogs have had a similar thing, but they were only slightly ill. My boy probably got it worse because of his age.

If he is sleeping peacefully he will probably sleep it off overnight and I would not worry too much unless he starts being sick etc.

I have had three dogs with bad tummies, one had a rumbling tummy, but all three of them had bad diahroah, and have been getting me up at 4am for the last three days to go outside.

I always check their temperature, and make sure they are drinking to ensure they do not get dehydrated, but if they were lethargic and unable to move I would certainly take them to the vet. Do you have any lectade or glucose that you could get some fluids into him, be careful to only give him around 5ml at a time, either put a small amount into a syringe or use a plastic spoon.

Give us an update tomorrow. Hope he is better soon.

he got up to go out about an hour ago but stopped to have a long drink before he went outside, then he has had the runs really bad, he came back in, flopped back in his bed and hasn't stirred.
he was up and roaming around most of the night apparently, so my sons tell me now, and so maybe he has been grumbling with this for a day or so, i went to work at 8am and didn;t even notice : ( anyway, as the vet has suggested it may be a virus, there must be something about, my other dog bingo seems fine though
