Wasps

the windows of my bedroom are constantly open and I get a lot of wasps coming in. They're my worst creatures, they creep me out! I've tried spraying them with furniture polish, deodrant and bleach but they don't die. What else can I use? And also, if they sting me will it hurt?

I agree with Enigma I've noticed a wasp population explosion this summer, a little worrying perhaps these little critters are gearing up to beat cockroaches in the world domination stakes. Whilst I'm sure mother nature knew what she was doing 'making' wasps I think we humans might be helping to tip the balance in the wasps favour. After all small though their brains may be they do have them and they've probably learnt that buzzing around humans in a threatening manner usually sends them screaming away leaving behind a free and rather large dinner of whatever sugary food attracted them to the human in the first place! Much more efficient use of energy then buzzing around hundreds of flowers.
If you can't beat 'em - feed 'em.
Hi, I seem to get scads of swarms of yellow jackets each and every year out here on our mountain farm. We have a creek right next to the house providing an excellent source of water for them and so get most of the flying stinging type of insects from the mountain. We have pets, livestock and young children so we feel the need to slow growth down just a bit so we can walk outside without stepping on a handfull of wasps in every step. (They litterally cover our grassy yard!) I stumbled upon an old farmers soulution one day and have used it ever since. Yellow Jackets love meat, So I feed them. They are very greedy little fellows and never know when to stop eating. I hang a piece of "meat on a wire" on a 5 gallon bucket handle. I fill the bucket almost 1/2 full of water with a good squirt of dish soap in it, then agitate it a bit to produce bubbles. I set the bucket on the ground under a tree near the creek with the handle tied upright so the meat just dangles over the middle of the bucket. - I do this quickly!!!!- While I am still tying the handle to the tree limb I generally have a handful to a small swarm of yellowjackets eagerly picking at my meat. Oh how sweet I talk to them. "Come on little Babies, Momma has your dinner for you!" Those fellas figure out all too soon that an over full yellow jacket cannot fly well and cannot swim at all in soapy water. I have killed litterally hundreds to a couple of thousand in a day, depending upon the size of meat I use. They eat it all fast! I dump the buckets of bee water in a fire pit to prevent steppping on stingers and burn on top of them in the fall. It does not work well however for Black Hornets. IF anyone could provide a simple farm solution to them I would be grateful!
