Triming ash tree

I want to trim an ash tree the tree is about 25 foot high if I cut it through the trunk at about 9 feet will it re-grow from the cut line or from the ground, or should I trim the branches

it should throw out new shoots from the cut line area. Ash responds well to this- google coppicing and pollarding for further info.

We've numerous ash trees here in the western U.S. that had reached 50 to 60 feet in height. We were concerned about the tops being blown out in the occasional high winds we experience and had them cut back to about 30 to 40 feet. That was three years ago and they have recovered sufficiently that, in th esummer, one really can't tell where the main cuts were. It's especially important, at least in our trees to cut back one side of any crotch areas that most ash trees develop. The crotch forms a water basin and can rot the tree. Additionally, it's a naturally weak area and cutting back at least one side to no more than a few feet high helps strengthen the entire area above the crotch...
