Abandoned microchipped dog
2 Answers
someone I know had a dog microchipped in their name, split up with their partner and left the dog with the partner.
The partner didn't register the dog in his name but then decided that they didn't want the dog and were going to just leave the dog in the house as they were moving. A neighbour decided to take the dog to a friend who would look after it as they couldn't just leave the dog. The friend who was looking after the dog then rehomed it to another person - the original owner now wants the dog back 15months after he left it. Does he still have rights to the dog, as its still microchipped in his name?

Technically the only proof of ownership is a receipt for buying it, although microchips have been taken as proof in some cases, usually where the dog has either been stolen or gone missing, and been rehomed by someone else. In this case, its a moot point whether the microchip will stand up in court if the previous owner takes it that far. I would call their bluff and tell them to take the new owner to court. I doubt if they would want to pay the costs of a court case. Tell them to get the microchip number read and notify the microchip company that they now have the dog (most are registered with Petlog).
I would not give a dog back to a man who was happy to
" just leave" the dog alone at the house to what, starve to death ? WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THAT ? and now he wants it back, he should be put down himself, what about next time he decides to abandon the poor animal, it has already had several homes poor thing.
Dont give it back.
