My neighbours have killed my ivy
My neighbours (who are too lazy to garden) recently employed a friend who is a builder to come and totaly clear all his fences of any growing object and cut down all mature trees. The 6ft chain fence ajoining our properties is his boundary and so I had no objection to his doing what he wants his side. However in clearing a very mature ivy (which I always kept trimmed my side - and which created a screen between our properties - the builder sprayed the ivy with weed killer, which has drifted and killed off all the ivy which had established itself on my side of the boundary (it had rooted some years ago). The spray also did serious damage to some mature shrubs in my garden and I'm having to replace them to acheive my privacy again. Can I seek compensation for the damage they have done?

Do you normally have a good relationship with your neighbour? If you do, I'd seriously reconsider seeking compensation from them over what is basically just plants. No amount of foliage is worth falling out with neighbours over as living next door to them can become a nightmare if communication breaks down.
By all means - have a friendly chat with your neighbour and see if this can be resolved amicably.

Thank you Mamjet for your personal attack on someone you have never met. I'll assume you too are too lazy to nurture and grow something for many years, that others can admire and enjoy only to see it destroyed because it represents a little work to keep going for future generations to enjoy. I expect your'e the type to concrete over any green space because you're too idle to cultivate it.
Thank you, the others, for your comments. I'll bare them in mind.

I think you should get some fence panelling too. It's a pity that your soul less neighbour feels he has to destroy plants and trees which are a haven for birds etc. They also screen noise and pollution and for heavens sake-they look a hell of a lot nicer than a bare chain fence. I really do think there is a sub-class of beings on this planet!
Most shrubs take 5-7yrs to reach maturity, unless you buy them from garden centres. Most of us still get pleasure from growing our own.
Get a 6ft fence and hide the now awful view. Don't retaliate, it's not worth it. Deny the moron the pleasure of your garden instead! Good luck from Daffy mouse
