Border terrier x shih tzu
I have recently bought a border terrier x shih tzu puppy saw the mother (border terrier) but not the father. The puppy is now 3 months old and looks very like a border terrier but I can see no evidence of the shih tzu there, in fact it's growing into a very big dog considering it's parentage. Has anyone else got a cross border terrier/shih tzu, if so how big did it get. I would appreciate your answers.

Find it hard to believe that anyone would pay 300 quid for a cross breed.
Cannot answer your question I am afraid. IF the parentage is correct (after all you have no guarantee that the father was a Shih Tzu) then it should turn out to be a reasonably small dog.
Just out of interest were the parents pedigree? Had they had all the health tests for that particular breed?

You cannot predict what a pup will look like - some will look very much like one of the parents and some will look like a mix. I know a dog that looks like a purebred black lab, but the white speckled right front foot gives away the border collie father!
Both borders and shih tzus are small your pup dog shouldn't grow very big.

Although it is difficult to predict what a crossbreed puppy will look like, the parents can give some sort of guide, provided they are 'normal' specimens of the breeds themselves.
The breed standards give the following ideal sizes:
Border Terrier 5 - 6.5 kgs for bitches 6 - 7 kgs for dogs
Shih Tzus 4.5 - 7.5 kgs and no more than 27 cms high.
If your puppy gets much bigger than these sizes, I would say there is a fair chance a Shih Tzu is not the father.
Have the breeders got any other breeds? Have you spoken
to the breeder and voiced your concerns - they may not know their bitch was 'got at' by another dog.

We have a border terrier/Shihtzu cross. He has a shihtzu face and head, the longer hair, but is colored like the dark border terrier. He weighs in at between 38-40 pounds, he is very solid, thick chested but has the most wonderful personality. He is laid back, loves kids, other animals and people. will chase squirrels, cats and rabbits. Other than that he is a wonderful dog. We love him
