If you want a 'short back & sides' look consider buying some clippers, they cost about the same as a single grooming session & come with scissors & instructional video/cd!
A friend started by having her dog groomed professionally when it was a pup, at a groomer recommended by the pup's breeder & then once the dog was trained took over doing it herself.

Our local vets charge about �10 to cut nails, but we do it for free for our customers on the stall. As with the eggs (see other thread) everything costs more such as electric, phone, insurance, petrol, so things are never going to be cheap again.
The groomers have to pay their mortgages as well, so if you find a good one, be prepared to pay or learn to do it yourself. My friend charges �15 for a straightforward trim and bath, but a more complicated cut would be �20 - �25 depending on time taken.
