Yesterday we woke up to find hundreds of little white balls in the goldfish tank - there weren't any on the fish just all over the tree and on the stones at the bottom. Has anyone any idea what these could be?

these are most likely goldfish eggs, but i'm surprised that they haven't eaten them yet.
alternatively they could be baby snails - possibly brought in on live plants.
With all due respect, goldfish eggs don't float and they are very hard to see due to them being transparent when they are first spawned.
If they are very small 'balls' it is probably pollen from a (fruit) tree nearby.
Or has someone played a joke on you and left a box full of those polystyrene packing balls open in the wind to blow all over your place?
Are they bubbles? :-)

Hi, thanks for your answers. My first thought was that they were eggs but not sure how this would happen as there is only 1 goldfish!?!?! There aren't any living trees in the water, there was just 1 platic one which we have now taken out. And no squarebear they are not bubbles LOL
I have left it for someone else to say but nobody did so I will.

Don't take offense but by your description of the problem it may be that you (or someone) have been grossly overfeeding the fish and the little balls are if fact uneaten food that has a fungi growing on it. This can indeed happen overnight.
If you think this may be it, siphon it out of the tank with a hose.
