Ponies will move away from a waved arm but the donks need more encouragement (waved stick not hit them!) and cows has horns so I like something to wave from a distance.
Btw never let a cow near your car a mate of mine got the side of his car stove in by a cow scratching itself....also mind their saliva its like chewing gum to get off the bodywork

Hi bluehornet - I sometimes walk with a stick when out with doggie (its not a walking stick if you see what I mean - more of a carved thing). Partly because my back will sometimes give me gip (after serious horse riding accident years ago) and often it comes in useful (when we take different tracks) to hold back brambles and nettles etc to enable us to pass through into the greener pastures yonder and carry on exploring!
Avatar: I understand what you are saying but 90% - that does not bode well. I meet many good doggy owner friends on my walks and we all have our poop bags to hand - if there is not a doggie bin then we take them home. Unfortunately - yes - there are many dog owners (for want of a better word) that turn a blind eye and will not pick up the mess left by their dogs. Its infuriating and irresponsible on their part.
However, I also have to say that humans can be no better! I have seen litter left, nappy bags left, refuse that is all harmful to the beautiful wildlife, horses, foals, swans, etc etc etc that we enjyoy in our area. (Even tho bins are to hand and emptied on a regular basis.
What is the answer? I wish I knew. :o(

Not all dog walkers have sticks, but I do occasionally if I am going somewhere where I know there are deaf dogs that dont know their name and stupid owners who let them off the lead to harrass everyone else.
90% of owners let their dogs crap all over the place, dont think so, feel free to prove me wrong.

I agree with you jules77. Its the minority and the ignorant who spoil it for the rest of the responsible owners. If my pup does a poop, then I clear it up - as do others that i meet out walking.
Just wish the minority would get a grip and stop ruining it for the rest of us doggie owners and anyone else who has the misfortune to tread in the mess!

I must admit to carrying a stick when walking my dog , I would undoubtedly use it to fend off any other unruly dog that wanted to have a go, Its not fun when you have to carry your dog home after being mauled by another dog that has not been trained properly by its owner , although sometimes its a 50/50 whether to fend the dog off or attack the owner ....lol
