My rottweiller is constantly humping my scatter cushions on the sofa. I don't want to get him 'done' but can't cope with him doing it anymore. How can I stop it? He is nearly 3 now, will he grow out of it?
having him done won't help if he's 3. You can teach him not to do it, the same way you would teach him not to do anything else...tell him not to, distract him, call him to you and praise when he comes. It might also help to temporarily remove the scatter cushions and wash or dry clean the covers. I do speak from experience, our late beloved entire male weimaraner used to do this and we taught him not to by the methods I have described
well it didn't with ours, you don't hear of the problems that castration causes, incontinence and fatness to begin the list. Entire dogs can live happy celibate lives!!
Having him 'done' really won't help, because bitches do it too!
My dog was 'done' but it was when he was 6 mths, so it's could be force of habit for your dog. I should think he likes it! Just erm, hide all the cushions when Aunt Mabel comes round and warn her against padded clothing!
Good Luck
My dog used to start humping everything within reach including guests. It used to cause embarresment proceeded by much hilarity. I don't see the point in the getting the poor pooches nads whipped off. He'll grow out of it, mine did.
The dog I had when I was growing up humped anything and everything, and he was "done" when he was a very little puppy. We didn't know anything about training, so we didn't train him not to do it. Consequently he humped till the day he died. Quite embarrassing - he had a thing for a particular friend of mine. Anyway, I don't think your dog will grow out of it, and you should try the training methods Woofgang mentioned.
