6 Answers
our GSD has been diagnosed with perianal fistures. We have gone through one course of antibiotics with no resolve. The Dr. is now recommending cyclsporine. I am concerened about the handling of the med. and also the expense. My other concern is that this is not a sure cure.Is this something that will continue to plague the dog.She is only 3yrs. The Dr. also suggested spaying her. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone out there got a better memory than me? Poor dog, i know this is a prob with GSDs, hope you can get it sorted.

Here's a website with some info. I hope this helps you
Hello,
Our GSD Drake also has PF. There is a wonderful group at Yahoo that is there to solely provide info. and support for this disease. Just go to "Yahoo groups" and type in Perianal Fistula. The people are wonderful and you will really find out all you want to know. Good luck, I know how awful this can be on you and your pet.
Sincerely,
Christine
a little more info. for you. Perianal Fistula is never really "cured". It may go into remission though. Cyclo is really the only drug that will help, but a lot of people also use Protopic. With Cyclo, blood tests must be done to watch for liver problems. Our Drake weighs 120lbs. and for his weight the cyclo costs $328.00 american. Ask your vet about ketokonazole...it is relatively cheap and helps the cyclo work better, so you don't need as much. If you have any other questions, let me know...we've been battling this for about 8 months now...
