I have just read an article on Red Indians who utilised EVERY part of their cattle. Bones for weapons and construction, skin for clothes, all the offal was eaten, blood drank etc etc etc.
I am aware that ASDA two pence sausages probably use willies, bumholes and eyeballs etc and those elephant legs calling themselves doner meat probably contain the less salubrious parts of the ovine anatomy.
But what percentage of the entire animal of British cows, sheep and pigs are wasted even after dog food is made?
Any abattoire workers, butchers or knowledgeable folk know the answer?
Nothing is saved.....have you eaten any black pudding (blood and fat ) or pork pies ( everything goes in them ) including ground bones., but dont they taste great !!!
Brawn isn't brains - it's a boiled up pigs head, jellied. Very nice too.
Sweetbreads are testicles.
Lights (lungs) and other offal goes into faggots and haggis.
Bones are ground up and made into fertiliser for the garden - bonemeal. They are boiled first, along with the hooves and connective tissues to make glue.
I used to cook pig tails over the open fire- not much meat, but lovely and crunchy. :)
Dog food is mainly made from old breeding animals which have reached the end of their productive life.
