Tax return question - travel expenses?
5 Answers
Hello. Today I am completing my tax return. Yes, I know, live dangerously. I have called the tax people and somebody is going to come back to me with an answer next week, however I thought I would check on here to see if anyone knew.
Basically I work as a free lance pianist, and part of my job is to play piano a couple of nights here and there in central London hotels, restaurants etc. My question is, for these days, when I have to get a return train ticket or travelcard, is this permissible as a business expense? As far as I can see it should be, since it is directly incurred because of the work I am doing. However the guidelines seem to be vague at best on this one. If anyone knows or has an opinion I'd be very grateful to hear it.
I don't want to put the charges down and then find I've committed fraud, but I'd sooner include them than not and end up paying too much tax.
Thanks again!

Although no expert, I am fairly confident that these are totally legitimate business expenses (far more legitimate than many which are claimed I am sure). Make sure you keep receipts etc to prove you actually spent the money and you should have no trouble.
