chestnuts

I have just collected some chestnuts but in each one I have two or three small wons I havent had one good size one to roast yet. They are ready there prickerly shells are splitting open. Any one no why.

This is how they seem to grow here.....think its the variety of tree. The large ones in shops are all imported.
