They can, but not as normal humans do. They are colour blind to red and green shades. That's slightly puzzling, because they ought, surely, be able to blood from grass ! The answer must be that ; in reality, that lack wouldn't affect them. They can be excellent at seeing movement; a sight hound pays instant attention to potential, and distant, prey when the prey moves; and are good at seeing in low light. And they have a wonderful sense of smell, which must help them to find and distinguish things with great subtlety. These other abilities serve them better than our colour vision would. The dog certainly knows where the prey is ,and has been, by smell alone !
I was going to say that dogs know the difference through smell.
But it was a conversation that H and I were having and he reconned they could see in colour and I seem to remember hearing somewhere that they couldn't.
I did hear as well that it was likened to seeing in sepia brown.
I don't know if that true.
My dog is a spaniel cross and has been likened to what is called a field spaniel. I haven't ever heard of them, but when hes out with H and he sees a rabbit his attention is absolute to it.
And boy can he chase them.
But I have always loved to know whats going on inside his head when he sees a rabbit.
