It is not an attractive look, no.
But maybe a desire to think that they are still 'with it'. the men must accept that they are going bald and have a haircut to suit their 'baldness.'
And be a better man for it.

I was talking to a really lovely, almost bald, older guy at a friend's wedding in the summer and when he turned to get his drink there was a teeny, little rat's tail hanging at the nape of his neck.

Absolutely aweful. Even on Francis Rossi (sorry Ethel!)
Once a man loses the hair from the top of his head very short hair is essential - not shaved right off though (very few men can get away with shaved heads!)
