Their food is a bit like the best selling book - eats shoots and leaves. They eat buds of various shrubs and trees, especially fond of Bilberry. Despite being such a huge game bird (about turkey size) they roost in pine trees, and during the winter months pine needles taken from treetops are a favourite food.
