Vegetarian gravy granules / Goldenfry
9 Answers
Hello everyone, I really hope someone can help me, well it's for my daughter actually so fingers crossed. She is a vegetarian and doesn't want to use 'ordinary' gravy granules. The trouble is, we have tried Bisto vegetarian ones and they aren't very nice ... ok in soups etc but not to put over a nice dinner!! Until a couple of years ago I was able to buy really nice granules from Goldenfry which actually tasted like 'proper' gravy but I can't get them anywhere now:( Does anyone know where I could get them from or does anyone know of an alternative. I would be very grateful for some help. Many thanks, Kim

I'm veggie and make up my gravy using Bisto powder (NOT the granules... as you say, that stuff is horrible).
For half a pint of gravy, mix 4 heaped teaspoonfuls of Bisto powder with a little cold water in a mug or cup, to a smooth cream. In a separate saucepan, pour half a pint of boiling water over a heaped tablespoonful of double strength tomato pure concentrate and a heaped teaspoonful mixed dried herbs. If you have some vegetable stock, even better - or use the water from cooking veg (or even a vegetable stock cube). Leave for some 10 minutes or so (to allow the dried herbs to rehydrate) and then heat up on the cooker. When the stock or water is hot, slowly add the Bisto cream and stir well and continue to heat gently until the gravy is the consistency required.

We use bisto powder also, however I don't like it plain gravy not much flavour to it. So I fry a small or half an onion up in fat or oil slowly till golden, maybe add a little suffing mixture into it and then add the gravy to that. Its nice just with the onion but it makes all the difference.
You can also buy curry sauce and parsely sauce granuals which are nice on some dinners.
