Are there any weather-watchers out there? Are we really to believe the latest about this winter being exceptionally cold?  If they can't get it right from one day to the next how can they come up with this?

Do you think it's a conspiracy to get us all out spending on clothes & winter supplies etc etc?? Or maybe to boost the travel trade & get us all - not me tho' - to book foreign holidays? .....winter draws on!!!

I've seen more acorns, hazlenuts and berries on the hawthorns, hollies etc. around my way than ever before this year. I recon the mother nature knows something is coming our way!

It`s all calculated guessology......based on the law of averages, current trends, and market forecasting.

It`s all a Big Brother plan to get you to spend money in the run-up to Xmas [not CHRISTmas] and to perpetuate the Capitalist System whereby the rich get richer and the common plebs just do what they`re told.

George Orwell was spot-on........wherever you live you`ll believe whatever the box in the corner tells you to believe.

Cynicism advances with age.......we`re all doomed!!!!!!!!

My sister said the same as you RogerK but I would have thought that's more to do with the conditions that we've already had.

Where's New Forester? - bet he could tell us!

My barometer has just whacked down to below 1000 milibars but the wind is light from North North East and so I guess the low pressure is not far away, between here (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Germany in the North Sea. That means air circulating from the Denmark or Sweden area. Cool, but not what you get if it zooms in from the Urals.

We have been the recipient of a series of deep lows from the Atlantic for most of the year, and if it continues through the winter then I suppose we are in for a wet and possibly windy time. When we are in a high pressure area during the winter we have clear skys and lots of frost. If that happens in Russia whilst we get a deep low around and to the south of us the wind will whip that cold air straight down the country North to South. The cold continental air from the North and East and the damp stuff from the Atlantic meet and hey-presto snow!

Thanks Hippy for your answer - winter isn't my thing but not so bad if it's crisp & bright. The wet & windy is what I hate most - bit of a wind tunnel where I am in Derbyshire!
