chihuahua..when can i breed her

we have had her for 7 months now..we got her when she was 2 months...so that makes her 9 months..she has blood now and obviously in heat...is it better to wait till her next heat or can she mate now...also how many of a litter does chihuahua have....

I don't wish to be rude, so don't take this the wrong way, but why would you even contemplate breeding when you know nothing about it??

And what will you do with the pups once she's had them? Could you guarantee they'd be placed in good homes?

I don't mean to sound patronising here, but there's so many un-wanted dogs (and other animals) in kennels that I peersonally wouldn't dream of adding to the population. And frankly, there's so much in and out's of breeding that I'd leave it to the experts.

I agree with all of Boo's comments. Apart from anything else the pup at 9 months old is far to young to have pups of her own.

Agree with others. She is too young, and if you dont know the answers to these questions you need to do more research yourself. Whelping litters is not something to be taken on lightly, apart from finding suitable homes afterwards.

Chi's often need c sections (they cannot give birth normally), can you afford this?

Can you be with her 24/7 when she is due to give birth so that you can get her to the vet if she needs it?

Are you prepared to have her die giving birth?

Thanks, McMouse ! There used to be a story that they were originally bred to be eaten.If true, it's not something that chi breeders mention much!

Apart from anything else above (all true and valid points about inexperience, her age, complications etc) is this a dog bought from a proper breeder and registered with the Kennel Club? The original breeder is likely to have put restrictions, in an effort to stop you breeding from her at least without their consent and approval as to sire. (Of course, you may not be the type of person to neither know or care, but it's a point)

This is not beginner's territory.The fact that you ask, rather than having contact with the breeder or breed club who would know you or the breeder, is quite disturbing.You really ought not to try.You don't even know how many pups the breed throws, a degree of ignorancce which is frightening, and itself gives the impression that you see this (utterly misguidedly) as a way to quick profit, regardless.

Whether we've "fallen for it " or not, we ought to answer questions like this because, whilst the questioner may be a prankster ( or gravy!), someone out there may be genuinely planning such an action . If so they may read this.

I agree fredpuli, and have said as much myself in the past.
However there are some people who will never take on board what advice is being offered and if people are intent on breeding from underage bitches they will do so without our intervention.

The Kennel Club will not register a litter from a bitch that is under twelve months old at the time of mating, and no bitch should be bred from at her first season. No reputable stud dog owner would allow their dog to mate a bitch under these circumstances and who in their right mind would buy a puppy from a breeder who knows so little and would consider doing such a thing. In this day and age there is enough information available on the internet about both breeding and buying puppies, that no-one should end up either breeding or buying something that is not suitable.

Also if you only paid �600 for a Chihuahua bitch then I dread to think of the quality/breeding/pedigree, as the going rate for a puppy is at least double that, but you would only get that sort of money if you were a reputable breeder.

No the vast majority of these are caused by ignorant people breeding from dogs with taking the trouble to find out about the breed or having their dogs health tested, and by ignorant people buying dogs from them without making sure the health checks are done and that the pedigrees are genuine and compatible.
You only have to read on here to find out that many people do not bother to have their dogs tested, or even check pedigrees before letting their dog have a litter or mate a bitch. Reputable breeders spend thousands of pounds and many hours studying pedigrees and supporting research into conditions perpetuated by puppy farmers and back yard breeders whose only interest is in making money from the dogs. Would you buy a car without a registration document or an mot? Then why buy a dog without registration papers or health certificates?

If this person breeds from this underage Chihuahua against the rules of the Kennel Club (even if it is registered which I very much doubt at that price) what comeback would you expect any puppy buyer to have if things went wrong? How many Staffordshire Bull Terrier buyers/breeders on here have had their dogs tested against L2-HGA or Hereditary Cataract and how many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are from parents tested for Mitral Valve Disease or Syringmyelia? Yet people still buy from untested parents - I am fed up of having to defend decent honest dog breeders who have the breed at heart when so many 'pet' breeders cause a lot of the problems. I breed healthy pedigree dogs and am proud of the fact!

Surely Kennel Club "standards" required certain breeds to have characteristics that vets argue are not in the animals best interests in terms of health. This is why BBC has withdrawn from Crufts.

lankeela your talking a lot of bolls......i asked first was it ok to breed my chi at 9 months...i didnt say i was going to did i? read the question first before jumping down my throat and labelling me ,,i dont know too much about dogs hence the question,and also the going rate i believe for chi in uk is about 8-900 pound as this was the figures we were getting from everyone....so now i know that a dog cannot be bred at 9 months i will wait for her to go into heat again then have her serviced...............and then i will sell the pups for a tidu profit ok...whats wrong with that? its my right ,i own the dog,shes at a good enough age,she will be looked after well as she is now,,so what is your problem???

Well, all I can say. from what you've said, is I feel sorry for the poor bitch. You don't sound as though you're in this for anything other than an imaginary profit. 'Cowboy' seems a curiously, appropriate pseudonym.By the way, have you guessed how many pups there'd be yet? If you do the maths and work out how often and the chances she'll produce just one and add in vet's fees for the likely op and the stud fee you might think twice.
