Eating soil

My friend has a 4 month old Border Collie pup who keeps eating soil and mud, both in the garden and out of indoor plantpots. Is this a sign of some sort of deficiency or just normal ' puppiness ' ?

How Funny, now I'm no vet but we've had BCs for ever, we currently have one at 5 months and he physically eats sticks !!, I think you'll find its general puppiness but you would be advised to ensure its been recently wormed
