Adult salmon return to rivers to spawn, but don't eat much at all while they do this (you can still catch them with a hook, not because they are hungry but because they can't help snapping at small fish-like things dragged past their noses).
Farmed salmon eat pelleted food made from minced fish, which are caught in the sea indiscriminately.
