Could possibly be laminitis or something similar, perhaps a vet should have a look at it. Hope it'soon better.
I would certainly agree with Schutzengel.. but would add (after you've called your vet) that if you have a foot knife, clean the foot thoroughly, if the horse will let you. It's possible there's a stone bruise or even a possibility the horse has stepped on a nail or other injury. Feel the foot in the sides of the frog to see if you detect a high temperature, which is usually present with lamanitis. This will all make you feel better by doing something while you await the vet... Best of luck...
Agree with both replies here, although Clanad's right about the possibility of a stone getting caught in the hoof. This's a common cause of lameness as well. Let the vet check your horse asap. Fungal hoof infection can be treated, but sometimes it's best to remove the shoe and let the horse walk "barefoot" for a while. Best of luck to you.
also check for Thrush - characterised by bad smell from the frog (particularly the cleft) will cause lamesness if bad - also check a small stone hasn't run up the the front of the hoof and caused seedy toe.- there will be a pocket-like gap up in the toe -best let your farrier have a look, in my experience most of them are brilliant with foot problems.Really need to get a diagnosis before you start treating. Good luck and keep us posted.
