At the beginning of the 20th century (mainly 1904-1911) very large numbers of colibri (hummingbirds) were exported from America to Europe (mainly the UK). For which purpose?

They might have been imported for the millinery trade,that is to use their feathers to trim hats!
Although founded before this,the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds received it's Royal Charter in(oddly enough)1904,maybe as a result of public revulsion at this horrible trade?
