Water boatmen

Hi

Does anyone know if what appears to be dead water boatmen on the surface of our pond is actually their "molt"? I read somewhere that they have various stages of molting before they reach full adult size.

Or are they carnivorous?

Our pond has literally hundreds of them at the moment.

Any suggestions appreciated.
