Miniature Schnauzer

I have a Mini Schnauzer puppy of 9 weeks old, what is the best way to get him to sleep through on his own at night? He keeps crying all night long!

What I did with Max was the old hot water bottle wrapped in one of my old shirts, left in his basket for him to cuddle up to. At 9 weeks he's only a baby and he will have been used to curling up with his litter brothers and sisters, but he'll soon setlle with something warm and familiar smelling to curl up to

my best advice is to understand that this pup has just been removed from his family - how would you feel at nine weeks if you were put in a strange place? Puppies don't come pre programmed to sleep through the night. Don't blame him or her, rather reassure them that they are welcome in the family. I'm really surprised you were't given advice by the breeder. Give a cuddly toy, alarm clock and hot water bottle if required. This is a very young animal needing reassurance.keep in touch

There is no "best way" to get the equivalent of a human infant to sleep alone. He's just left his mum and siblings, he's totally dependent now on you and he can't understand why you can't/won't let him be with you.

If he's really going to be a true member of your family, what's wrong with having him with you (literally)? Eventually, he'll decide when he's old enough to sleep by himself. That will happen but not yet, he's far too young. Give him a chance.

we are now on our 4th and 4th puppies we got two brothers this time. With the first pup we got excellent advice from the breeder which covers the crying and night housetraining which is to have the pup in your room in a box or crate close to you with cosy bedding...Having tried both, a box is better i think. When the pup cries, get up and take him outside for wees and poo and then put him back in the box and settle him again. None of our have EVER cried at night and as they get older and more confident and find their comfy places to sleep you can get rid of the box. If you don't want pup on the bed then don't allow it...myself I don't see it as a problem, again as they get bigger and find there is no room up there, they will move elsewhere.
I was quite shocked to see a video in our vets about bringing a new pup home which said that crying at night is normal and pup should be settled and left to cry....I mean how ould you feel if you were taken out of your family then dumped alone in a strange place all night?

I agree with paddywak. I gave Lucy (shih tzu/poodle cross) a warm fleece covered hot water bottle, although it was December, and a couple of my old T-shirts that I had worn for a while so they had my "smell" (ugh, sorry about that). I would have loved for her to sleep with me but with lots of wees and poo's I do not recommend that. She is now 7 months old, goes to bed in the kitchen but wakes me at around 6am most mornings but I don't mind. Clean overnight too. I will admit I did find her very, very hard work at the beginning so be prepared but stick with it as the rewards are ten-fold.
