If you take off all the extension tubes and just use the cleaner head its almost as handy to use a cylinder vac which has the power to do the job. Some will sit nicely on the stairs and just move up as you work with the power lead coming from the side over the landing rail. I use a big Meile for pet hairs but there are handier machines.
If you have tried all this my apologies

If you go with seadogs idea I can fully endorse his recommendation of the Meile. when I posted a similar question about dog hairs (I've a long haired GSD) almost everbody who replied went for the Meile I got one and it beats any other I've had hands down. Can't help with the stairs problem as I've a bungelow
I was all for the Meile 2760 [?] upright but as my other half pointed out we have a perfectly good Dyson upright and he is not prepared to fork out 279 for a new vacuum cleaner until this one conks off ! [ lecture given on credit crunch, hard times etc !]
So its back to looking at hand helds for the stairs, Dyson too awkward to maneouvre.
maybe I could drop the Dyson down the stairs .................once again tks for the replies
