how to stpo a dog howling

i have an 18 month old jack russell, he was abandoned by last owner, he is howling all the time when left on his own, he is blind in one eye and slightly deaf

Awww... I agree with Pipsy. try and be with him as much as possible, and if you have to leave him for a bit, make sure he has plenty of toys near to him - and food and water of course.

Poor little thing.... I know a warm hot water bottle wrapped in a towel can help in their beds for young pups.... as it reminds them of their mums warm body. Maybe your vet can recommend a behaviour expert too. he needs lots of love, time and reassurance - and big fusses when you come home or walk in the room...
Maybe do what they do with babies - go out of the room - and come back a few seconds later - then each time you leave the room extend the absence by a bit - he will eventually learn that when you leave - you will be back.
And please dont go on a holiday anytime soon without him- that could undo all your hard work!

It wont be easy but he will repay you a million times over in love!

I would disagree with one thing - if you make a big fuss as soon as you walk back in the room he will think there was something to have been worried about, you are best to ignore him for a little while, just go about your business, put the kettle on etc. then when you are ready call him to you for a fuss. This also helps with dogs that jump up and bark and whine when you return home. I go straight into my kitchen without going in where the dogs are, and after a few minutes they have all settled down and I go in to see them, otherwise they all go mad as soon as I get home.
