Paw biting Westie

A neighbour has an old Westie, which has taken to biting her own paws, stripping the hair and attacking the tissue.

She has been to the vet but the anti-biting liquid put on the area hasn't worked. Owner doesn't want to put a "lampshade" collar on her permanently. The dog hasn't got mites. I suggested possible dietary deficiency but I should really appreciate suggestions to help the old lass.

My dog used to do this and we were told it was because she was bored. We were recommneded to make her work for her food by hiding her food and also to use a dog toy that you can put food into to make her have to work at getting it out. It did help a bit but when we got another dog she stopped biting her paws completely. She is old too and I was worried that the pup would be too much for her but it has given her a new lease of life.

Thanks Poohbear. Old Sally the westy used to have a companion and now isn't too active (though its about 9 months since her friend died). Will certainly pass your comment on to the owner with any others that come in. Pleased that you have a new pup.I know they can work wonders with older dogs. Makes us young too!

could it be an allergy tell her to ring her vet and ask about giving the dog piriton

Could she have a thorn or seed in her foot that has been driven below the surface of the skin(therefore being invisible to the naked eye)?

Also thanks Daffy. I had a good look last night and its not a thorn. My own dogs have been subject to those, living much rougher lives than the westie and I appreciate your comment

Try sea salt solution and bathe the paws, it's antiseptic and also anti infammatary, also try a capsule of evening primrose oil in the feed, it helps with skin conditions.
