My 13 month old will not drink cows milk at all. She just pulls a funny face and lets it drip out the side of her mouth. I give it her in porridge and she's fine with that. I also put it in mashed potato etc. She eats yoghurts and cheese though. I'm giving her 1yr + formula milk and she has approx. 2 or 3 bottles a day (7oz). I have three questions really, 1: is it a problem that she's not drinking the cows milk? 2: Should I be stopping the formula?, and 3: does she need to have milk in her beaker now and not a bottle. She drinks water out of beakers all the time. Thanks in advance. JOEY (PS - I have been trying her on the cows milk with health visitors advice from 10 months)
If she is eating cheese and yoghurts (made with whole milk, not low fat) then it wont be too much of a problem that she isnt drinking milk.
The follow on milks tend to contain a lot of sugar so be careful but they are a good source of extra nutrients you are concerned that she may not be eating correctly.
And yes, ideally she should drink everything from a cup, but its not always that easy. Baby CRX still has a bottle at bedtime.
That's great. Thanks redcrx. Yes she eats lots of cheese and yoghurts (with whole milk) and is generally a good eater but just will not 'drink' the cows milk. You've made me feel a bit better about it though.
I'll also make up her next milk in a beaker and start getting her used to that.
Thanks as always for your rapid and very helpful response. Regards to 4get. JOEY
the difference in taste between follow on milk and plan cows milk is huge.
You could maybe try given her watered down milk and gradually increasing the strength but i really think that she is probably getting enough from other sources.
Hi Joey - my son wouldn't take to cows milk straight away either so I gradually over the course of about 4 days mixed his formula with cows milk starting off with just an ounce then eventually 100% cows milk and this worked just fine. (he was about 14 months too) I wouldn't necessarily advise changing to a beaker at the same time (depends on how adaptable your little one is!) I have only just recently stopped letting my son drink from a bottle (he's 33 months!! I know I'm a terrible mum!) and he now won't drink more than 2 ounces whereas he was drinking at least a pint per day from his bottle. Best of luck x
Just wanted to say a BIG thank you to redcrx. You suggested giving her slightly watered down cows milk so I tried it straight away and she has been drinking it very happily! I feel so much better. I'll gradually decrease the water until she's drinking just cows milk. Thank you sooo much. No more formula. Wee haaa! Joey X
yey, brilliant news.
Babies are such a steep learning curve, and as she grows youll realise that sometime you just have to trick them to get things changed lol :)
