Whats biting me?
6 Answers
Hi there I fell asleep the other night on the sofa for a few hours like I do most nights, and the next morning I started scratching the middle of my back. It turns out I have like 6 huge bites back there. I think when I was asleep on my side and my tshirt moved up and my pants down it exposed the lower back area and some insect had a feast. I had a throw over the rest of me and trousers on so my arms and legs are fine. The following night the sides of my face have been bitten too yet again the only part exposed if these bites were from the first night I dont know.
I want to know if someone can help me with what insect this might be from its behavour, is it a midge or possible fleas. I do have animals rabbits and guinea pigs but they are purely indoor and dont go out, we could have brought them in possibly on our clothes for somewhere else? There have been midges in the house?
Any help would be great I dont want to keep getting bitten, thanks.

However, flea bites tend to be around the lower legs as the fleas usually are on carpets. However, could well be gnat bites as these often come in clusters on and can be quite nasty. Give your rooms a good spray with insect killer and leave the door shut. That should take care of gnats. Flea treatment sprays for the home would also be a good idea. I know midges bite, but don't know much about how they look.
Could be gnats or fleas but are you only being bitten when you're on the sofa? That happened to me three nights running so I very meticulously vacuumed it (& the cushions). As I was cleaning I spotted a small thrip-like thing, bit like what we call a storm beetle, but slighly longer & browner. Needless to say I squashed it & wasn't bitten again in the house. Since then I've had them jump on my hands & arms when pruning shrubs & they've given me some nasty sore bites but I can't find out exactly what they are.
You haven't got a newish leather sofa have you? There;s been lots of complaints regarding the sachets of anti-mould chemicals that have been put in the sofas in storage and it has been causing many people with rashes etc. There's a link here if you want to investigate.

I hope that it is just an insect rather than having to get a new sofa! Hope that your bites clear up quickly.
I've tried an anti-bite spray called Jungle Formula which seems quite helpful.
