hedgehog flea's

is it common for hedgehogs to have a lot of flea's? my dog picked one up in the garden last night and is now absolutely infested, she, and her bed has had to be fumigated and also my chair and the rug, she only had the thing for about 10 minutes, she didn't hurt it but rolled it about and barked at it, it must have been the local bug factory.

Oh yes hedgehogs have loads of fleas. The thought of them is making me itch. Good luck getting rid of the. You may have to deflea the carpets expeciallyon the edges.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society says that hedgehog fleas are specific to hedgehogs and will not 'normally' live on other species. They would say that, wouldn't they ? LOL Not much consolation, if you don't like any fleas in your house. The flea which is commonest on dogs is, strangely, the cat flea, so keep an eye on visiting moggies ! The hedgehog flea and the dog flea are different species of flea, Archaeopsylla for the hedgehog and Ctenocephalides for the dog and cat. The cat and dog flea are of different sub-species.

no they won't live on other species but they don't know that and will bite other species!
I keep my dogs well frontlined as rabbits, foxes and deer also carry flas

thanks everyone, as woofgang says I suppose the fleas have to try before they buy, pity that they did in fact like me better than the dog, as I am well and truly bitten, I sent out for some spray and powder to make sure the little blighters are all gone.
