Hi, We have got a Neon which is over six years old, and during this week has gone very dark, to very unbalanced and not very well at all, ive been to fish place bought stress coat water tonic, there is nothing wrong with the water ( had it tested) I cant look at it any longer it is just twitching and still breathing after seven days of no change, I have seperated it two days ago in a floating bag in the tank as the others started to nibble at it, Daughter will go mad here but its unfair on her to sit and watch it it is constantly on its side, and i just want to end it now......but i cant squash it, so any helpful answers will be most appreciated.

many thanks
jo

take it out of the water and when it's dead put it back in.....daughter will think it's just died....
flush it down the bog..

yup- flush it down the loo--dash round to the pet shop- get a new neon-put it in the tank-tell daughter it made a recovery
Hi Josaphine32

Show it "Finding Nemo".........then flush it down the loo!......tell your daughter it just passed on. :0)

You could do what crafty said, if you think it would do better if your daughter saw it before flushing it down the loo or burying it in the garden!

Good Luck.

Put some clear alcohol in the bag with the fish,it will die fairly quickly.Vodka,White Rum or Gin would be perfect.
put it in the freezer
excellent thinking ruthann....just move the hubby's body to one side....
Please do NOT flush down the loo, dead or otherwise.

I have to admit ive totally wussed out having to kill any of my fish and let nature take its course, however if i was forced to do it, I think i'd put it in a paper bag and wallop it. That would seem to be the quickest method.
Its FRIDAY fry it in a bit of butter and have him with some chips..
I just found this nugget of information on a fish forum:

''I've been told that the easiest, most humane way to kill a fish is to put it in a bag, then put that bag behind your car and run it over, real quick like''

Genius...

Thankyou for your answers, There was no way i could have flushed it down the loo....... Daughter came back and got to pc before I did......She went mad, I took Boos advice waited till she was up stairs and took the poor thing out the tank as quick as possible wrapped it in kitchen roll and walloped it.. although i did not want to do it and ..I thought i was going to be sick at he time ..but it was very quick ..and daughter is well not happy we are on the ignoring stage at the moment.

THANKS ALL
Fish Fingers off the menu for tea then?
for future reference, ruthann is quite right. take it out in a little water and put it in the freezer.

unless you're after more entertainment!
Lol Josaphine- a sulky daughter, oh how i dont envy you! How old is she? Old enough to understand that sometimes it has to be done?

Obviously try to disuade her that the same can't be done to grandma when she becomes old and doddery ;-)
and all joking aside, whilst there's nothing wrong with Sara's method, the way I sugested and one you took is quicker and more humane if you can bring yourself to do it.

Boo...Kate is 15 but this fish was quite sentimental. They were my sisters and they emigrated in january to OZ and we ended up with the fish, The fish had a long happy 6 years more than most fish, You know what kids are like cant see the wood from the trees, it was best all round it souldn't swim for 5 days just twitched ...If it was down to her she would have had an autopsy done on it to find out what was up with it....lol
The most humane way to kill a fish is to put it in a cup containing an emulsion made of clove oil and tank water to anaesthetize it then put a double vodka in when it has gone to sleep. Flushing is cruel and how would any of you like to freeze to death in the chest freezer of a suburban semi's garage? Use your brains for fecks sake!!!!!!
daginge, the freezer is what it says to do in my fish-keeping book. thanks for your comments though, very touching.
For future reference, I asked this question some time ago, and was recommended Clove oil, as Daginge says. It works well, and they gently pass away very quickly without any apparent pain.
