What is the story with babies in the womb?How can they breathe if they are surrounded by fluid?

They receive oxygen from the mother's blood across the placenta which diffuses into their own blood supply...........

Do they have to keep their mouth shut so that they don't drown in there?
No, the lungs are full of liquid, so nothing can go down.
They swallow the amniotic fluid (which accounts for the regular bouts of hiccoughs) but they do not need their lungs to breathe as their oxygen requirements are fulfilled via the mother.
I guess babies are like fishes then, except their gills are invisible.
