Everyone has their own personal preference on dog food and it is important to strike a balance between your own budget and your dogs' nutritional needs for his unique lifestyle, You would be best to continue the puppy was being fed on when with the breeder, as long as this was a good quality food, at least for a while. What suits one dog, doesnt suit another.
Agree with jules, but I would say you should feed the best quality food you can afford.
If the puppy has been used to a complete food, try to feed a better quality extruded (pellet) food rather than one of the 'flaky' types. I have always fed Eukanuba, but there are many different types on the market. If you want to feed tinned meat and biscuits, I would go for either Butchers or Pedigree, with a good quality wholemeal mixer biscuit. Dried puppy foods vary in their content, and a puppy needs quite a high protein food until it is about a year old. Check the protein contents on the pack.
I have fed Hills for 20 years, now feeding Hills Natures Best and prior to that I used Eukanuba, only changing to Hills as I was feeding a prescription diet. Apart from a brief period of feeding one of the puppies Purina (which I found to put on too much weight), I am happy with it, and the dogs do well. But I also cook vegetables with chicken or mince and add as a topping to one of the meals (I feed twice daily). Occasionally I also add grated raw fruit. There are a lot of good reports on Arden Grange at the moment, which you can buy online cheaply at http://www.feedem.co.uk/.
Wafcol is a dry food that can have water added to it to soften. I have used it for both my staffies and found that it provides them with an exceptional balanced diet, a healthy weight gain whilst growing and great coat. If you don't give extra food like left overs, just give the odd dog treat, your puppy will have a good healthy life. Wafcol comes in different varieties for different stages and diets. I highly reccommend it.
