strange birds

Hello everybody. I'm new. I spotted 3 birds which were mostly black with a white trim on the edge of the wings and their beaks were yellow & red. Never seen them in our area before. Any ideas anyone ??

How big were they Jillysman. As big as a Crow or much smaller

thank you grasscarp. I looked them up on wiki but the picture on there wasn't quite like the one's I saw. Redman41 they were about as big a a pigeon

I too had a Moorhen in the garden, just the one, but its the first time I've seen them in the garden! Whats going on?

The last time I had a moorhen in my garden it was in the cats mouth >;.;<
