COLLAR ON A LONG HAIRED CAT.

I have a 7 month old male Maine Coon kitten. He has a beautiful long hair coat.
Someone told me that you shouldn`t put a collar on a long haired cat. !!!!!!
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

You shouldn't put a flea collar on a long haired cat as the pesticide in it becomes too concentrated in the hair around the neck and can cause the cat problems - that's what my vet told me wen I had a long haired cat anyway. He never mentioned anything about an ordinary collar.

what's the collar for? Long haired dogs wear collars but not permanently. I should think there's a risk of it getting tangled in the hair if you leave it on all the time

I put a flea collar on my Norwegian Forest cat and he ended up with sores under the collar. never again..

I have a long haired cat (Cat 1) and he doesn't wear a collar - my cats are microchipped so they don't need to wear ID tags. They used to have collars with magnets so they could get in the posh catflap but Cat 2 nearly hung himself on the collar (it's not uncommon apparently to get them caught on branches etc., mine got his collar caught on the handle of the window when he was looking out) so no more collars for me. Cat 3 used to get inside his collar and wear it like a bandolier slung over one shoulder, when I used elastic collars for safety, so that didn't work either. I don't recommend them at all for security and safety (and they don't need one to look pretty either!).

PS We use spot-on flea treatment monthly for all our cats, so no need for flea collars either.

Neither of mine wear them (they're short haired though) because I don't like collars on cats, and as the previous poster has said they can be dangerous, get him microchipped instead.

I don't put collars on cats either (have had long and short haired). Micro chip them and treat them once a month to protect against fleas. Never had problems. I particularly dislike when I see cats with bells on their collars, must be very irritating to ring everytime you walk!

Oh i dunno CD, you manage to walk up and down your high street ringing a bell very well (oo that rhymed!), couple that with the sandwich board you wear, you pull it off rather admirably.

I would never put a collar on a cat especially one with a bell on it, they are natural predators and the bell gives their prey the heads up literally which is torment for the cat,
